The essay below was written by Ian early in his senior year in high school, while he was an exchange student, living with a family in France. Ian’s dad was really proud of the essay, and showed it to a colleague at work, Marlene. Marlene liked it too. She liked it so much that she asked Olek for a copy, and posted it on the bulletin board in her office. According to Marlene, she liked to read it in the morning, to help her start her day. About four years later, this past summer in 2012, Ian was hired for a internship at his dad’s company, and happened to be working for one of Marlene’s subordinates. On the first day that Marlene met him in person, she showed him the essay on her bulletin board, and said how pleased she was to meet its author. She asked him to sign it.
